👉 The 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the 23rd edition of this prestigious event. The tournament takes place from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Notably, this will be the first time that three nations host the FIFA World Cup. Moreover, it will also feature an expanded format with 48 teams instead of the previous 32. Furthermore, the event will take place across sixteen cities: eleven in the United States, three in Mexico, and two in Canada. The World Cup is a quadrennial international championship for men’s soccer, contested by the national teams of FIFA’s member associations.
✅ What are the updates for this FIFA World Cup?
In this edition, the FIFA World Cup has expanded to include 48 teams, that is, an increase of 16 teams from the last seven tournaments. For instance, the teams are into twelve groups of four, with the top two teams from each group and the eight best third-placed teams moving on to a new round of 32, as confirmed by the FIFA Council on March 14, 2023. Importantly, this marks the first expansion and format change since 1998.

The total number of matches will rise from 64 to 104, and teams that reach the final four will play eight matches instead of seven. In sum, the tournament will span 39 days, an increase from the 32 days of the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. Each team will still compete in three group matches.
✅ How does the Group Stage function?
The group stage runs from June 11 to 27. Competing nations are organized into twelve groups of four teams (groups A to L), with teams in each group facing each other in a round-robin format. In the group standings, three points are given for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. After the group matches conclude, the top two teams from each group, along with the eight best third-placed teams from all groups, will progress to the knockout stage.
